Honorable Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano MBS, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry of Kenya received Africa Leather & Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) delegates led by Mr. Ghebregziabher Ghebremedhin, Acting Executive Director, Programs Coordinator at her office on the 6th of November 2023.

The purpose of the visit by ALLPI to Kenya was to propose and get guidance from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry about the cohosting of the 16th Annual Regional Consultative Forum in Mombasa, Kenya.  

After self-introduction, the honorable Cabinet Secretary opened the meeting by warmly welcoming the ALLPI delegates and invited the head of the delegates for submission about the purpose of the ALLPI’s visit.  The Acting ED started his briefings by thanking the honorable Cabinet Secretary for receiving the ALLPI delegates despite her busy schedules.  He then briefed the honorable Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary and other officials of the ministry   what ALLPI is and does, what is the Annual Regional Consultative Forum and the proposal to cohost the 16th Annual Regional Consultative Forum in Mombasa, Kenya.

After the brief submission by the acting ED, the honorable Cabinet Secretary thanked ALLPI for the support of ALLPI to the leather sector in Kenya and welcomed the proposal to cohost and convene the Forum in Mombasa, Kenya.

She also took the opportunity to high light the leather sector in Kenya as a priority sector for the apparent reason of its huge potential supported by one of the highest livestock potentials in Africa capable of sustaining the supply of demand of raw hides and skins necessary for robust hides and skins manufacturing industry.

The honorable Cabinet Secretary further stated that the Kenyan government recognizing the importance of the leather sector to the economy in terms of contribution to GDP and employment creation at grassroots level, has included it in the list of priority sectors in Kenya vision 2030 and the leather Manifesto.

The honorable cabinet Secretary concluded the meeting by applauding ALLPI for selecting Kenya to host the 16th Annual Regional Consultative Forum and reiterated her Ministries commitment to work with ALLPI in organizing a successful Forum.  At the end of the meeting, she assigned a committee members to work with ALLPI.

On the side of the Ministry, Dr. Juma Mukhawana, PhD, HSC, Principal Secretary, Mr. Noby Macharia, Ag. Industrialization Secretary and Director of Agro Industries. and on the side of ALLPI Mrs. Tigist Hailegiorgis Admin, Budget and Finance Head and Mr. Harrison Mungai Leather Value Chain and Tannery Expert attended the meeting.   

 On November 7, 2023 the allpi delegation as a continuation of meeting leather stakeholders the ALLPI delegates met Dr. Isaac Noor KLDC CEO and Mr. Charles Ndungu   Technical director at KLDC. Dr. Noor the CEO of KLDC applauded ALLPI for selecting Kenya to host the 16th Annual Regional Consultative Forum and expressed KLDC’s readiness to work with ALLPI in organizing a successful Forum.
