The 6th meeting of technical harmonization committee (THC -07) on textiles and leather products was convened at Sarova Stanley Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya from 5th to 8th of November 2019. It was attended by 27 delegates drawn from African Countries/Institutions namely; from Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI), Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda,  Zimbabwe, Sudan and  ARSO Secretariat from Nairobi. Apology was noted from South Africa. ALLPI was represented in this meeting by Harrison Mungai (the Institute’s Leather Value Chain and Tannery Expert.

Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) in collaboration with Leather Industry Development Institute of Ethiopia (LIDI) and Ethiopia Leather Industry Association (ELIA) facilitated the business mission of France composed of five business people and Association Leaders to the leather Industry in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 7th – 9th November 2019 . The business people were from major industry players in France (DEGE TRADING / NORCUIR, COVICO / NOUVELLE SOCIETE ARNAUD, FORTAIN, NICK WINTERS HIDES & SKINS / BIGARD / SOCOPA, SYNDICAT GENERAL DES CUIRS ET PEAUX).

ALLPI in collaboration with Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Trade of Kingdom of Eswatini conducted training on Footwear Design, Cutting and Assembling during 14th – 25th October 2019 in Ezulwini Valley, Kingdom of Eswatini. The Training venue was Cooperative College for the theoretical part and for the practical part was taking place in crafters training center. The Training was sponsored by Regional Integration Support Mechanism (RISM).

ZIMBABWE and other African countries are losing billions of dollars in potential revenue from sale of leather products due to poor industrialisation policies and weak value-addition strategies, a leather expert in Ethiopia has said.

Mekonnen Hailemariam from the Leather Institute in Addis Ababa, on Thursday told African journalists attending an African Union media awareness on the Accelerated Industrial Development for Africa (Aida) framework and related strategies and industrial policy literacy, that 16% of global hides and skins were from the continent, but the source countries were earning very little from the leather industry.

 High University Officials from Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) Academia Platform participating Universities visited Ege University, Turkey from August 25-30, 2019. The purpose of the visit was sharing of knowledge/experience, benchmarking and signing of MoU for close collaboration with Ege University in the areas of mutual interest. The delegation included vice chancellors, Directors, Dean, Department heads and senior academicians from six universities, namely Bahirdar University-EiTEX-Ethiopia, Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology-Kenya, Sudan Technological University-Sudan, Kymbogo University-Uganda, Makerere University Business School-Uganda and Copperstone University of Zambia.  ALLPI in close collaboration with Prof. Bari Basaran Dean, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Science of Ege University facilitated and coordinated the visit program. Prof. Mekonnen Hailemariam, Advisor to the Executive Director, ALLPI, led the visiting delegation.

The Expert from ALLPI with the consultant from Member States went to Mauritius to give training on Basic Leather Goods and Footwear making technology from 19th to 23rd August 2019.

The main objective of the mission was to enhance the skills of SME’s in producing Leather goods and footwear in the newly established satellite Leather studio in the compound of SME Mauritius Ltd Handicraft Training Academy & Business Development and Facilitation.

A five-day Leather Craft Training Programme aiming to enable participants acquire knowledge and skills to develop leather products kicked off, yesterday at the Business Facilitation and Development Centre of SME Mauritius Ltd, in Coromandel. The training programme is being conducted by the experts from the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI), in collaboration with the Association of Leather and Leather Related Products of Mauritius.
