  • Total Quality Management Activities focusing on Hides and Skins

    Course description:

    The module is planned to empower and create awareness to the target participants to appreciate the need to be involved with the quality assurance and final hides and skins as a requisite raw material of the leather industry. In particular, the course brings to the fore all critical aspects related to the techniques of handling the animal prior to, during and after slaughter. Integral to the training programme phase will attempt to provide to the participants exposure to modern flaying techniques, use of tools and equipment and the general management of the resultant hides and skins after slaughter. The principle aim is to involve this pertinent segment of the leather value chain and core stakeholders to create a worthy material for the beneficiation of the leather value chain. It is anticipated that at end of the course all those involved with management of the abattoir will assist to maintain high stands of operation during slaughter and flaying.

    The module targets hides and skins traders/collectors, abattoir owners, tannery and relevant workers associated with preservation and handling of preserved materials. The imparts novel techniques relevant to the hides and skins preservation and use of tradition methods proven to be eco-friendly. The cost effectiveness of various preservation techniques in relation to their ecological benefits will be discussed to enhance the participant’s competence on the subject. A view of global trends and perspectives will also be elucidated to preview both the positive and negative aspects of the preservation technique explored e.g. impacts of salinity etc. The course strengthen the participants knowledge and practical base for the subject.     Course description:

    Introduction to cleaner technology and environmental management towards leather processing is a middle level course targeting SMEs and established tanners. Critical aspects such as greener production of leather processing, energy efficiency methodology, processing audit and effluent treatment will be discussed in depth. This module will further prepare the participants to comprehend on how to comply with eco labeling conditionality as a niche market entry initiative. In exploring the principles of cleaner technology a close link to appropriately designed environmental management will be discussed. With an intensive training approach to the participants of this module orientation will be adopted with advanced institutions at global level collaborating with ALLPI to train the participants.   • Hides and Skins Quality Production through Improved Flaying Techniques

    Course description:

    The module targets the flayers operating in abattoirs as handlers of the hides and skins in the first instance after slaughter. The content is, therefore, designed to impart the necessary skills to handle the carcass and the resultant hides and skins whilst minimizing on the damages associated with this operation. As such, modern techniques on appropriate slaughtering, flaying, conveyance and post flaying operations of the hides and skins will be demonstrated. A regime of 80% practical with 20% theoretical dispensation will be deployed to predispose as much ‘hands on’ skills as possible to the participants. At the end of this course it is anticipated that the flayers would have been made aware of the value of the hides and skins and attained skills that will enable them flay high quality hides and skin and handle the material appropriately prior to preservation.
